Tilda Swinton Quotes

tilda swinton quotes 1I can’t pinpoint what exactly draws me to Tilda Swinton. Everything, I guess. I didn’t know much about her until the day I read some interviews to find these quotes. I still don’t, actually, which is perfectly fine. I look forward to watch more of her films, now that I’ve glimpsed at how she sees art, family, beauty… life.

“You can’t find a Scottish person who won’t burst into tears when they hear the bagpipes. Even if they’re in Beverly Hills. I live in the far north of Scotland, which is so beautiful. We Scots all love nature. I think we’re wired for the hills and sea. And where my family live is a very beautiful sort of semi-wilderness that really suits us. It’s so green. Sometimes, when I’ve been in America and I go home, it’s so green that I have to literally rub my eyes as I look out of the aeroplane window.” (source)

“I believe that all great art holds the power to dissolve things: time, distance, difference, injustice, alienation, despair. I believe that all great art holds the power to mend things: join, comfort, inspire hope in fellowship, reconcile us to our selves. Art is good for my soul precisely because it reminds me that we have souls in the first place. We stand before a work of art and our spirit is lifted by it: amazing that someone is like us! We stand before a work of art and our spirit resists: amazing that someone is different!” (source)

“Their task is to stay invisible and unreflected and unnoticed. As Eve says to Adam in the club when he’s getting freaked out because his music’s playing there: “Don’t draw attention to yourself.” That’s her modus operandi. For someone who looks as she does to walk through the streets of Tangier without drawing any attention at all shows how incredibly well she does it. That’s what she’s perfected in her life over the centuries. That’s what survival is—this sense of removal and imperviousness. (Only Lovers Left Alive; source)

“Always the idea that vampires are very frightening, dark, and they would kill you. But slowly I worked out that they’re not gonna kill you, but actually make you immortal, so I was never very frightened of them. I thought they were very powerful, I always thought of them as related to witches, which I’ve always been very fond of. Even since I was a tiny child, I’ve never had problems with witches. I always felt they were powerful, but what’s wrong with that? So, vampires and witches felt magical. They were never a bad thing when I was a child. Apart from Nosferatu, that is.” (source)

Being a parent is a sacrifice. One really does give up a lot and there is a part of you that does die. Hopefully, one gets a lot back. There is a certain joyful chaos that comes with having children, which suits me fine as I’m too lazy to want much control. They are great kids and I’m a very hands-on mother. They say that if you hug your babies they will grow. Well my two are enormous.” (source)

tilda swinton quotes 2We are a close-knit family. We laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Dancing is a passion in our household and we do it as often as we can. We do it in a way that is totally insane and absolutely not to be witnessed by anybody.” (source)

I already feel like I’ve lived for several centuries, even for the short span of life I’ve been alive. Life’s long. Even if it’s short, it’s long. And it’s a pretty fascinating ride. It doesn’t feel like a long stretch for me. But at the same time, of course, these immortals, they know they’re not gonna die. I’m pretty clear that I am. But then there’s an element in which all artists feel [they will never die], so that felt familiar – that feeling of being tapped to this idea of an immortal vein.” (source)

I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world. It’s all about creativity. It’s not about everything exploding at the end. It’s about something very different. The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!” (source)

“I’m on the faculty of Béla Tarr’s film school in Sarajevo, and when I was showing Derek (Jarman)’s films to the doctorate students there, so many of them had not heard of him, which is not to their discredit but it says something about history. It’s 20 years since he died and it’s never going to be not necessary to keep perpetuating [his work]. It’s not preserving, it’s just keeping it, throwing it out there, because it is that modern and it is that relevant and powerful.” (source)

“I never quite understand the way society decides who is beautiful and who is not, but an open face and a capacity for kindness always feel like reliable signifiers to me.” (source)

We know what threatens our humanity the most; we shouldn’t need reminding. The capacity to project our own shadow onto others, to edit our understanding of our own frailty, to hold it at bay, to play tag with our vulnerabilities.  You’re It, don’t touch me. Our attachment to an idea of malevolent foreignness, of malign darkness: this is our Kryptonite… we know this well.” (source)

My life is a weird combination of my friends throwing me opportunities, and me dreaming tilda swinton quotes 3opportunities up. Then when something dovetails like this movie (OLLA), when I was already thinking about mortality, a particular predilection of mine, it was very intimately sewn up with my own life. So the short answer is I don’t have a career, I have a life. I follow my life and the way I’m living it so no, I don’t have an exterior judgment on what would be good or bad for me.” (source)
