I’m ascending the Palatine Hill
and my dusty feet feel the history
that lies beneath them;
the sun burns my face
and I look both amazed and saddened at the stony walls
that were once rooms in the emperor’s palace.

Everything constantly changes:
palaces became ruins,
emperors turned into ashes:
only the sun smiles the same to everyone it encounters.
