Why fans love Tom Hiddleston

March 21, 2014

tom hiddleston tumblrI didn’t really feel the need to write this after Why fans love Loki, but in the meantime I met a person I like to call my soul mate when it comes to films. I love my friends dearly, each of them is special and brings something new in my life… and so did this girl, who’s just as weird as me. Now, I don’t really consider myself a fan, mostly because there are still films with him I have not seen. That and I don’t exactly linger for long when it comes to actors. Then again, this last aspect changed quite a lot after I discovered British television a few years back. I love just about everything I’ve discovered until now. So maybe I am finally ready to commit. Anyway, for her, for me and for all those who love Tom Hiddleston, here is an article dedicated to him.

He’s a great actor, no question there. And he’s still young, I’m sure he will keep on growing as time goes by. When he’s old and we’re old, we’ll tell our children and grandchildren about his early carrier, about how we watched him evolve and loved every minute of it. I don’t think there’s any role he wouldn’t be able to pull off. Look at him now… he is one of those people who can be with ease – both on screen and in his everyday life – a romantic, a goofball and the perfect villain. He’s talented and he works hard and he’s so passionate about whatever he does.

He’s insanely smart and we love that in both men and women. Tom loves Shakespeare and we love him for that; here’s a tip: when event_hiddleston_henry_V_304x384you don’t know what to say, quote Shakespeare. He actually uses what he knows, even if we speak about preparing for a new role, giving interviews or just talking with his fans. And he speaks various languages properly. That’s hot! Plus, we love his voice. You can listen to him reading Sonnet 130 or The Red Necklace.

We all have two lives. The second begins when you realize you only have one.

We love that he’s such a polite man, but there’s also a kinky side to him that shows that yes, Tom is indeed very much human. We like him even more for that. And he sits like a whore (sorry, I couldn’t help myself). Look it up, you’ll know what I mean.

He’s handsome… very handsome. Why do people speak of “standards” when saying he’s not that good looking? Who the fuck establishes the criteria according to which a man or a woman is or isn’t good-looking? How is a handsome man “supposed” to look nowadays? I saw him blonde, ginger, brunette, with long and short hair, with or without a beard, always tall and lean. I’m not sure what the colour of his eyes is, but they are beautiful. He looks great, end of story. The suits he wears agree with me.

t hiddyHe’s sexy. He’s confident, humble, down-to-earth, sassy, kind, funny… he’s adorkable. Honestly, I could go on all day and night. His laughter is special and makes our day better. Also, he’s a great singer, and I really wasn’t expecting that (you’ll find two videos here and here, check them out). One more thing before we move on: everywhere you turn, you will hear of Tom’s dancing skills. If you ask me, Tom can’t really dance, BUT – I’m not done, don’t plan my death yet – he can sure as hell move. Yes, his hips never lie.

He’s great with kids, we can’t forget that. Also, he’s a kind man and shows nothing but love and respect towards his fandom. He deserves the same respect from us. Far as I know, most of his fans are grown-ups; I’m not saying that maturity always depends on how old a person is, but if you have a certain age, you should know how to act around another human being. I’m saying this because I’ve read some upsetting things and it needs to be said: if you admire a person, treat them the way you would like to be treated, especially if you get the chance to meet them. He owes us what we owe him: everything and nothing.

When lights go out, he’s only human. He deserves not a pedestal, but privacy, happiness, love, adventure, a family. I article-0-12AC9F2B000005DC-372_634x832don’t know how Tom Hiddleston is in private and I don’t want to. I’m just happy to know that his public persona is not the complete opposite of his private self. Do I want to meet him? I would like to see him perform on stage, but I don’t want to meet him. Although I wouldn’t mind a hug… Tom seems to be a great hugger and I love a man who can give a proper hug (there’s an art to it, you know?!).

Why do you love Tom Hiddleston? Is the other question – why don’t you like him – needed? I look forward to read your answers!

Awww, what a lovely article. Thank you for writing it! I’ve been waiting for such a long time for someone to ask me why I love Tom, because I’ve been asking myself the same question over and over again. I don’t usually swoon over actors myself, I fall for the characters they’re portraying most of the time, after I see them in an interview my interest goes away. So after I watched the first “Thor”, I wanted to see Tom being interviewed, to find out how this man really was, and I was blown away. He is adorkable, as you put it, just a pleasure to watch him being himself and he’s so nice, I never imagined anyone could be THAT nice. He’s really inspiring because of his positive nature. He showed me that there can be an alternative way to living as opposed to the gloomy depressive state I was leaning towards to and that it’s OK to let your guard down and enjoy life for a change. Also, I have to say that I really love the way he enjoys the simple pleasures in life. I remember that in an interview he said that he had a really tough time at drama school and that he woke up one morning and saw the sun shine and he felt all right again. It’s just nice to see someone successful thinking about the true joys of life, instead of materialistic possessions. He’s also witty, humble and funny, traits which I just love in a human being. He loves dancing and Freddie Mercury(like I do :P), he doesn’t hate people, he’s above all that, he knows to ignore the critics and do what he does best, he doesn’t trash talk anyone, he is amazing with his fans(even when he’s tired), he cares about the children in Africa, he’s grateful every day for what he has and he knows how to wear a suit. Also, he can sing and play different musical instruments(the piano being his favorite – he often uses the metaphor about the 88 keys on a piano in interviews). He’s a wonderful human being that restored my faith in humanity. :)

I learnt something new; I didn’t know he could play the piano, that’s wonderful. He’s wonderful. He really does make you look at the world around you with different eyes, doesn’t he? I love people who can do that :)

I don’t know if you already found out about this but he recommended a movie to his twitter fans awhile back, it’s called “A bag of Hammers”(2011), you should see it. Although he doesn’t star in it it’s just the kind of movie that encompasses his personality.

Well, I love him because he’s beyond kind, humble and he’s ever a gentleman. He is old-fashioned but in the good way, isn’t he?.
Oh yes, and if we point out his physical appearance, I’d love to admit I’m in love with his eyes and smile and those long legs. I don’t even care if he’s got a normal or photoshopped body, what I love the most about his appearance is his face and the way he shows himself very enthusiastic, confident, comfortable and passionate about everything.
For me, this man is something even further than perfection.

Thank you for the beautiful answer! :)

    • Marilyn Micknowski on July 15, 2016 at 4:55 pm

I agree with you Teresa, his eyes and that smile do it all for me. How can a woman not love this man?! He is something even further than perfection!

  3. Hildegard Frey on March 24, 2014 at 2:04 pm

he is an inspiration for me do try new lessons. He is a real gentleman that is today very rarely. He stand for what he advocates, an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdCSc9wWC8g
he is capable of change in his movies a very talented actor. When he laughs laughing with his eyes. And it`s such a shame that some Fans don`t treat him good they harass him. I love your article and i wish him more Fans like you who worship him but let him be human in his privacy. Thank you <3

    • Elena Atudosiei on March 24, 2014 at 4:21 pm

First of all, thank you for the comment and the video! Another reason to admire him.

About that last line… I don’t think people should be worshipped; nothing should be… I don’t like this word “worship”. But that’s just me. I agree with you, it’s a shame that some people don’t understand what it means to be a fan.

Someone once told me that one could live perfectly well without reading, so why bother? Well, you could, but life would be so dull and you’d miss so much beauty. It’s the same with artists, actors or singers or dancers. We could live without them, they are not irreplaceable in our lives. But why would we, when they are so beautiful, so talented, so passionate?!

      All the best! :)

In my opinion, a true actor mustt have multiple personalities, artistically speaking, and Tom knows when to be tender and when to be tough. Just compare his voice when he speaks like Loki with the one when he recites E.E. Cumming’s love poem. :)

    • Elena Atudosiei on April 5, 2014 at 5:48 pm

If it’s one thing I love about the British actors, it’s their voices. God, they could say anything and still make it sound desirable. And Tom definitely knows how to use this gift of his 😀

  5. Mumzy on April 9, 2014 at 7:10 pm

The way my fangirling got started goes like this: I had seen Loki in action, and he was certainly attractive and watchable. At the time it wasn’t enough to hold my attention completely… and then I watched the many interviews and videos of Tom being Tom. If Loki was the bait to tempt me, then Tom was the hook… it was the ‘reel’ deal that lured me in 😉

I cannot think of a single reason I would not love Tom Hiddleston. Even my own husband admits to having something of a man-crush on dear Hiddles, which is not surprising considering what a gentlemanly rolemodel and general all-round good guy he is.

He’s rediculously photogenic AND audiogenic! A word that takes new meaning thanks to Tom. These aesthetic reasons are great on their own, but Tom has so much more to offer than that (as mentioned in the article): talented, wise, intelligent, funny… I love the word “adorkable”! He is compassionate and has an excellent perception of the performer/audience dynamic. Which brings me to the point about fans respecting him in turn; it is not at all fair for him to be hounded – it’s actually a form of bullying! It’s only the few who are guilty of doing so, but they should be encouraged to see it from his side.

He has what is known as ‘The King’s Two Bodies’: his ‘Body politic’ is his public persona (and this side of him is remarkable, unique, beautiful and addictive!) and his ‘Body natural’ is his private self, which does not belong to his fans/audience. (For more on this topic, see link: http://www.libraryofsocialscience.com/ideologies/docs/the-kings-two-bodies/index.html )

We love Tom Hiddleston for being Tom Hiddleston, and we are thankfully for it every day :)

    • Elena Atudosiei on April 9, 2014 at 8:04 pm

When you spoke about your husband, I remembered that bit from the Comic Con with Tom appearing in full Loki mode… when a man yells at one point “My wife loves you!”. He sounded so proud of it :)

I wish every fan would think like you… not just Tom’s, but everyone. To understand that you have no excuse to hound anyone, regardless of the fame. Thank you!

    • Marilyn Micknowski on July 15, 2016 at 5:06 pm

All very well said Mumzy! I agree with you, it’s difficult for some people to separate his public persona, his on screen persona and still believe there is a line that, respectfully, should not be crossed. I know it is hard for me sometimes because he is, as someone else put it, “something beyond perfection.” I actually do love the man for who he is and for his wonderful talent that we are so fortunate to have shared with us. We can never be “in love with him” only because we do not know him privately, which is something we will never know unless he decides to share anything with us, just like our own neighbors or our best friends.

I know why I like Tom. He is what I would call perfect with imperfections and I really love people like this. Funny but serious and he seems to have a huge heart.
When I was younger I always wanted someone with exact that personality he is showing off to the world (I’m glad I found my boyfriend first *lol* even though he can’t sing and is not so deep within arts).
Tom Hiddleston is the most amazing man i “know” and he is also the most inspiring person to me.
Your article is the best describing article I’ve read about him! Great work and THANK YOU for being an inspiration also!

    • Elena Atudosiei on May 21, 2014 at 9:42 pm

Thank you for the comment! As for that last line of yours… honestly, I’ve never seen myself as an inspiration for others. I can only thank you once more for your kind words and hope that you will find more interesting articles or poems on the website.

    Hi!!
I just loved your article, I have some difficulties to describe why I love Tom because he’s a huge inspiration, but you did so well done!! hahaha 😀
So after I watched the first “Avengers” I wanted to know more about the actor who played Loki so intensely that captivated me.
But I realised how nice, smart, funny and respectful Tom is when I saw his interview on youtube ”Conversation with Tom Hiddleston – Nerd HQ (2013) HD”. After I watched this, I became a fan. ^^
He’s a wonderful human being and a very talented actor. *-*
Sorry if I wrote something wrong, my mother tongue isn’t english but I’ve been studying! :)

    • Elena Atudosiei on June 6, 2014 at 4:40 pm

No worries, Soraia, English is not my mother tongue, either :). I’m happy I managed to put in words at least a part of your thoughts. I love that interview; it seems that every day I learn something new about him, which makes me admire him even more.

Thank you for the comment! See you on facebook, perhaps. It’s insanely wonderful how many fans are there.

      • Soraia on June 7, 2014 at 1:29 am

Yes, he has many fans around the world and this is awesome!!
I ‘liked’ a few fan pages on Facebook, including ‘Give me Loki’ ehehehe

Thank you for those amazing articles, especially about our beloved Tom.

Thank you for this article (and the other ones about Loki and Shakespeare). I agree with everything you have written. I took my son and some of his friends to see Thor 2. When we came out of the theater, they asked me who I liked in the film and to my surprise (and theirs too) I said Loki without even thinking. They thought I was crazy!! But, you really feel for the guy, don’t you!! I could really relate to him. Of course, the boys liked Thor best and thought I was crazy for liking Loki better. But of course they hadn’t seen much of life yet have they? Anyway, after that movie, I started doing a little research on Mr. Hiddleston as well and found the same things. He really is someone who can inspire others. I like that. I too hope to see him on stage–I search weekly for any mention of his coming to Broadway. He would be great in anything–the proverbial “I would go see him reading the phone book!” Anyway, hoping for that. And hoping he continues to find success and happiness in life. Loving The Hollow Crown–my English Literature teacher would be pleased.

    • Elena Atudosiei on June 13, 2014 at 6:16 pm

Thank you for your words, Donna! I love hearing from those who read my articles. I don’t remember how I discovered Tom Hiddleston’s name. It was probably something related to Benedict Cumberbatch. I had read a lot of nice things about Tom’s acting and I was curious to see if he deserved the praise. One day I went to watch a film with a friend and we ended up seeing Thor 2. And the rest is history :). Sort of. I was impressed, but I didn’t become a fan right away. It happened little by little. The girls from Hiddleston’s Army Romania (there’s a link in one of the previous comments) might remember that back in early March I was still not willing to name myself a fan. That changed while I was writing this article. Seeing him in other films and becoming part of the fandom destroyed any doubt I might have had.

I’d listen to him read anything, even the phone book. He’d make every name and number sound interesting. You’ll find poems read by him on the website and I will post more. I love listening to them when I take a short break from work (hopefully, he’ll record more soon).

When I first discovered Tomi was in a dark place in my life. I was starting to do drugs again, mostly pills, and was very depressed.I saw Thor the Dark World and, even though I have seen the first Thor and The Avengers I never paid much attention. For some reason I just fell for Loki and soon after the man who played him! He was funny, kind, positive, charitable, etc. He put a smile on my face from time to time which wasn’t an easy thing to do. Even though he does things recently I don’t agree with or care for I still can’t ignore the fact that he, even though he doesn’t know, helped me through my darkest hours. So yeah. That’s why I love the guy.
Btw, I’m sober and a lot happier now!

    • Elena Atudosiei on July 14, 2016 at 7:08 pm

My first Tom film was “Thor: the Dark World”; I’ll try to see it again soon and maybe write a review. Anyway, it’s good to hear that you are better now, Erika! Lots of hugs from us! And if you wish to read a bit about Loki, have a look here: http://elitere.ro/why-fans-love-loki/

      All the best!
