Maybe it’s because of the beautiful summery weather from my part of the world or my daydreams of a holiday. Either way, I cannot refrain myself from writing about an artist I like and whose music makes my days brighter and less stressful. I don’t know how many Greek followers we have, but I hope all of you, regardless of nationality, will enjoy this article. I love discovering new things such as music, books, movies that I’ve never heard of before and I’m sure we are on the same page. Therefore, without further ado, here are a few pieces of information about Despina Vandi and why her music is great to listen to.

Despina Vandi (Δέσποινα Βανδή), by her real name  Despina Malea, is a Greek singer, whose music is a combination of pop, pop-rock, dance and traditional Greek music (laiko) and whose prolific career brought her multiplatinum and national awards for her albums, but also international recognition through singles such as Gia, Opa Opa and Come Along Now, reaching very high on the Billboard charts (the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts), making her the first Greek artist to enter these famous charts. Despina Vandi also hosted the national final of Eurovision Song Contest twice, in 2013 and 2014 and she is now one of the coaches in the Greek version of The Voice.

Maybe you wonder why I chose to write about this artist, whose lyrics obviously form a language barrier between the people who know and those who don’t know Greek. Indeed, you can fully understand her songs only if you glance at a translation, and her songs have been translated into various languages, but the Greek language is so beautiful and melodious that sometimes you just need to lay back and let it flow through your ears like a secret and magic spell. Despina Vandi’s main theme is love, whether it is innocent love, flirting or breakup. Thanks to her mezzo and melancholic voice, you won’t regret a moment spent listening to these songs. To exemplify, I chose a few songs of hers I love very much: Spania, Ela, Ola Odigoun Se Esena.

So, if you had a busy day or if you just want to chill out and escape from inner tensions and noise, put on your headphones, close your eyes and let Despina Vandi’s songs take you on an imaginary journey to the Grecian coasts and the eternal blue waves of the seas that caress the Ancient land.

Despina Vandi has such a beautiful voice! I’m not familiar with many of her songs, but it feels nice to (re)discover them.
